Half The Sky MV Trilogy 2 of 3 - THE ELEVATOR GIRL

FOR
Half The Sky Public Education

INFO
Singer-songwriter Duan Yu wrote this song about a teenage girl who moved to the city to work as an elevator-operator. The music video is shot in areas of Beijing where migrant workers congregate, including the basements beneath buildings where so many of them live for cheaper rent.
Duan Yu used to live in the basement when she first arrived in Beijing. "After a day's work, the local residents would 'go up' while the rest of us 'go down.' It's so symbolic of our societal divide," she recalled.

Half The Sky MV Trilogy 3 of 3 - HOURLY HELPER

FOR
Half The Sky Public Education

INFO
There are some 20-million domestic workers in China, the largest such population in the world and the majority of them women. They are one of the most vulnerable work groups in China. Regulations in the field are loose so workers often lack legal means facing contractual disputes. Insurance policies are cumbersome, expensive and often neglected; a single accident could ruin a worker’s life and become a lifelong burden to the employer.
